Enlisted Albury 9 February 1917. Embarked Melbourne per HMAT A15 Port Sydney on 9 May 1917. Served—Egypt. Sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and neck on 5 November 1917, when his unit met Turkish opposition while pushing ahead following the fall of Beersheba. He died at 14 General Hospital on 30 November 1917. Trooper Arthur Meyers, a 31 year old crane worker from Newcastle was with 3 ANZAC Battalion and he wrote to the Red Cross Information Bureau (File No. 1030307: It was just after the fall of Beersheba and we were going in to attack on 5th November and he was hit by a bullet. He was then sent down to the 14th Australian General Hospital, Cairo and witness sent to the same hospital a fortnight later with sickness. Witness was in the habit of visiting him twice a day and was down to see him the evening before he died. He was a very popular fellow with the Company. Buried Cairo War Memorial Cemetery (O.41), Egypt. Age 23 years 4 months, Farmer, married, Presbyterian. He was 5'9½" and weighed 168 pounds with a tanned complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. Born at Glenloth. Son of George and Jane Exell, 73 Nimmo Street, Middle Park. Educated at Boisdale and Nilma State Schools. Served three years with 29 Light Horse Regiment (Citizens' Force) pre- war. Awarded the 1914-1918 British War Medal, and Allied Victory Medal. On the Nilma State School Honour Board.
