GORDON, Charles George
Service No 1544 Corporal 3rd Reinforcements of 11th Battalion
Enlisted 12th November at Helena Vale. He was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1891 to parents Samuel Gordon and Mary Abercrombie. He was a younger brother to Alexander Gordon who also served with the 11th Battalion. Charlie moved to Kulin in W.A. with his family around 1911. His occupation was Farmer.Left Fremantle 22nd February on the “Itonus”. Arrived in Gallipoli 7th May 1915. Charlie became severely ill on the 9th September 1915 with Rheumatism and was evacuated back to England to recover. Once recovered Charlie arrived in France to rejoin his Battalion on the 12th June 1916. He was wounded in action twice, first on the 18th July 1918 around Amiens and then on the 23rd August 1918 at Chuignes. Charlie was hit by a shell burst that blew a nine inch gap in his shoulder blade and penetrated to his lung. He lay paralysed til the late afternoon when he finally attracted a stretcher bearer by winking and before he passed out he remembered hearing him say “this one’s alive I think”. Charlie was sent to England to recover and here he met and married his English wife on the 5th October 1918. He returned to Australia on the 26th November 1918. Charlie and Madge lived in Kulin and had three children then moved to Perth in 1938. Charlie died in 1970 and his ashes are scattered in Karrakatta Cemetery.
