At great personal risk he went out and dug in two patrols. Later he rendered valuable assistance to repelling an enemy counter attack' Killed in action 09 October 1917 Aged 24 years Buried Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Panel 7 - 17 - 23 - 25 - 27 - 29 - 31.

Left 1916 on the "MEDIC" and returned 1919 on the "ASCANIUS". Died Melbourne 24 July 1985. Charles was one of three brothers who enlisted
with all returning to Australia. Charles was born Charles Edwin Wilton but his
mother changed his name when his birth father died when Charles was 5yrs.

Awarded DSO 'After the capture of the German trenches, a patrol commanded by Captain Nicholas found, on returning from a reconnaissance in front, that an enemy machine gun in a shell hole had been seriously menacing our men in the front line. Captain Nicholas, as soon as he had located this gun, went out again alone, and by great dash and initiative succeeded in capturing the gun.' Killed in action 14 November 1916 Aged 29 years Buried A I F Burial Ground, Flers, IV H 27
