He then transferred to the 1st Anzac Cyclist Battalion attached to the 4th Division. Unusually Bert does not seem to have spent any time in Hospital during his military service. Bert received the Belgium Decoration Militaire Medal on the 22nd December 1917 and the citation is as follows: “On his devoted attention to duty from June 1916 to date, as runner on Divisional Headquarters Staff. His bearing was conspicuous during the following operations: Messines June 1917 Ploeg Steert July 1917 Wytschaete August 1917 Ypres Sector September and October 1917 Whilst stationed at the Ramparts, Ypres in October 1917 he was called upon regularly to carry out his duties as Runner during periods of heavy shelling and he never failed in completing his tasks. He is strongly recommended for recognition.” Bert returned to Australia on the Port Napier 12th May 1919 and was discharged on the 17th August 1919. He married in 1921 to Emily Benson and had three children. He initially worked for a builder when he returned then the PMG erecting poles and later as a cable joiner until he retired.
