HAGGAR, Eric Newman
HAILEY, Ernest Godfrey
Private Richard Burles, who had sustained a gun shot wound to his right leg three days after Private Haines’ death, also wrote to the Red Cross Information Bureau from his bed in Graylingell Hospital, Chichester corroborating Private Heath’s account of Geoffrey’s death:
We were at Villers-Bretonneux in a trench when a HE [High Explosive] shell burst right on us killing Haines, who was sitting down, outright. Private Heath, A Company took possession of his papers and handed them to the Orderly Room. I saw the grave, just outside the trench, there was no cross on it up to the time we left about 36 hours afterwards.
No known grave—Commemorated on Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France.
Age 20 years 6 months, Solicitors Clerk, single, Church of England. He was 5'8½" and weighed 122 pounds with a fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. Born at Geelong. Son of Charles and Ida Haines, Warragul. Educated at Warragul State and Warragul High Schools.
Volunteered three time before finally being accepted for service.
Awarded the 1914-1915 British War Medal and the Allied Victory Medal.
