HICK, Stanley Frederick
Service no 941 Trooper 4 Light Horse Regiment (5 Rfns)
Enlisted at Shepparton 25 November 1914, and embarked at Port Melbourne on HMAT A56 Palermo on 7 May 1915. Landed at Anzac Cove on 24 May 1915 and was killed in action on 16 September at Ryrie’s Post, a southern extension of Tasmania Post on Holly Ridge, established by 7 Light Horse Regiment in mid-July. It was named after Colonel G. Ryrie, Commanding Officer of 2 Light Horse Brigade. Replying to an inquiry from the Australian Red Cross Society regarding Trooper Hicks, Trooper R A H Lester of 4 Light Horse Regiment wrote to the Red Cross Information Bureau (File No. 1330103: Hick was in his dug out with Leslie Ray at Holly Spur (Ryrie's Post is on Holly Spur) about the middle of September. They were machine gun men, and were resting just after being on duty. A six inch high explosive shell came over and blew their dug out to pieces, killing both men. The bodies were recovered and buried at Shell Green, just behind Ryries Post, at 6 o'clock in the morning……. He is buried at Shell Green Cemetery Turkey (Grave-I.H.7). His epitaph:- To Live In Hearts We Leave Behind Is Not To Die. Aged 26 years 2 months, Farmer, single, Methodist. He was 5'4" and weighed 112 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. Born at Drouin. Son of Daniel Philip and Mary Hick of Shepparton. Brother of Driver 29958 Albert Henry Hick, 14 Field Artillery Brigade; Private 4459 Harry Howard Hick, 9 Battalion; and Private 3647 Charles Daniel Hick, 58 Battalion. Awarded the 1914-1915 Star, 1914-1918 British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal. On the Shepparton War Memorial, and Poowong East State School Honour Board .

HIRST, Sam Herbert
Service no 6832 Sergeant 23rd Battalion
Born 28 November 1889 the son of Joseph Herbert and Hephzibah Hirst. Sam grew up in Geelong Victoria, and was educated at Ashby State School, Geelong. After school he worked as a labourer. He joined the Australian Garrison Artillery, Geelong, in 1903 when he was only 14 and over eight years qualified as a Bombardier, Gun Layer and Depression Range Finder, Signaller and in Musketry. He gained promotion through the ranks to Staff Sergeant Major. He was recruited to the Australian Army Instructional Staff in February 1915 where he trained soldiers bound for the war.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 16 February 1917 and was allotted Army Number 6832 in the 19th re-inforcements of the 23rd Battalion with the rank of Sergeant. He embarked on the troopship A11 "Ascanius" at Melbourne on 11 May 1917 bound for England. He disembarked at Devonport on 20 July 1917 and proceeded to duty at AIF headquarters London. On 30 November 1917 he joined his battalion "in the field" in France. He was made deaf by an explosion on 28 March 1918 and was sent back to England for treatment. He eventually re-joined his battalion on 27 July 1918.
Sam Hirst was killed in action on 17 August 1918 near Harbonnieres, France, aged 28, just 21 days after re-joining his unit. He was buried on that day in an isolated grave on the battlefield. Around September 1919 his remains were reburied in the Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, in Plot 5, Row F, Grave 14.
