'The deceased NCO was buried with Military Honours. Firing Party comprising members attached to the Administrative Headquarters Staff, AIF London, and also a party of mourners (deceased's comrades) from the R.B.A.A. Unit stationed at Tidworth under the command of Lieut. Taylor were in attendance. The 'Last Post' was sounded at the graveside. The coffin was draped with the Australian flag & covered with several lovely floral tributes. Prior to the interment a Service was held in the Jewith Hall at the Cemetery. Relatives present at the funeral wer Mr. and Mrs. F A Michaelis (Uncle & Aunt) of Ritz Hotel, London and several friends. Memorial to be erected by relatives.'

Born in Casterton, Victoria, a Flour Miller from Blackburn, Victoria, married aged 32 he enlisted on the 2 November 1917. He stated his next of kin was his wife Mrs I. Millstead of Mt Gambie, South Australia. Due to his poor eyesight he did not serve on active duty in a war zone but worked in Military Hospitals in Australia and London.
He was returned to Australia on board HS Kanowna on 28 August 1919 due to his failing eyesight.

Awarded Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When a heavy barrage fell on the sector held by this officer's company, anticipating an attack. He visited each part of the line, seeing that all were prepared. On the attack taking place, calling on his men to follow him, he led them straight for the enemy, whom he successfully repulsed.'

Awarded the Military Medal vide London Gazette of 17 December 1917, page 13199. The citation succinctly states: During the recent operations near Zonnebeke on the 26 September 1917, Pte. Milner carried back wounded from the Front Line to the R.A.P. [Regimental Aid Post] during the whole period of the operations and displayed great courage and devotion to duty. Wounded in action 29 August 1918, gunshot wound to left arm. Returned to Australia per Point Napier on 2 July 1919. Discharged on 9 October 1919. Age 23 years 6 months, Labourer, single, Church of England. He was 5'5½" and weighed 148 pounds with a dark complexion, hazel eyes and black hair. Born at Neerim. Son of Arthur Milner, Merndale Road, Glen Iris. Awarded the 1914-1918 British War Medal and Allied Victory Medal. On the Neerim East, and Neerim East State School Honour Boards.
