A fine horseman and bushman he traced certain outcrops from New South Wales through to Victoria and South Australia, across the Bight, far north into Western Australia, a most extraordinary piece of exploring. An expert in China and porcelain. A good musician. He was an examiner of patents for the Commonwealth Patents Office and a member of the Board of Examiners for Patents Attorneys.
Next of kin: Wife: Katherine Gordon Skertchly (nee McLeod) of 34 Glenferrie Road, Kew, Victoria He had previously served served as a Signaller in the Volunteer Artillery, Hong Kong, when he enlisted on 9 February 1915 in Melbourne, Victoria embarking from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 29 March 1915 He died of pneumonia and asthma at Heliopolis Hospital, Cairo on 14 May 1915 and is buried Cairo War Memorial Cemetery.
